In reclaiming ourselves away from Western gaze we learn to value our written records as gospel to ourselves, our descendants as well as the continuation of an ancestral tradition. Putting ourselves into writing is continuing the stitches in the quilt of our times. When we make a departure from our first hand accounting via writing, we deny the congenital assignment given to us as those representing rich cultures; we show we care nothing for being remembered. This disposition is useful ONLY to the Western culture, who needs amnesiac people to be components in its machinery and not caring how it maintains integrity of the past or how it will impact the future. When we write our testaments we are keeping these questions at the forefront of our existence and journeying accordingly. The next chapter of our peoples have a tangible story to hold onto and continue. Then West desires to sever us from this responsiveness to the unborn and we must resist assimilating, resist being meme-ed, instagram-updated, tweet-threaded, and entertained from our grave responsibilities, so simply summed in the practice of writing.
