Has being in Western culture given us a disdain for keeping our secrets? As we dewesternise we find ourselves keeping things to ourselves more and more, find ourselves learning that one of the best inheritances we can leave our descendants is a book of lessons learned hopes from yesterday, poetry concealed from public consumption, thoughts about circumstances today, and future intentions. The keeping of our secrets is a lesson we must master. Our cultures’ furtherance depends on us keeping a great measure of ourselves to ourselves. Western culture tells us that all our secrets deserved to be published, promulgated, reproduced, made into films and distributed for “educational purposes”. But peoples who give too much of themselves away cannot retain secrets that will deliver the psycho-spiritual DNA to their descendants. This is the power of our journals: they hold our secrets and become inheritance.
