Dr. Marie Clark Taylor was the first Black woman to receive a PhD in Botany. She served as the Department Chair of the School of Botany at Howard University, where revolutionized how science was taught in schools at the university and the grade school levels. Learn more about her here!
Emma Dupree was a self taught community herbalist and forager whose “9-Yerb Tonic” drew ailing people from near and far who would either pay or barter for this panacea.Her love for plants started from youth, and she had a thriving yard of healing herbs which she swore by, including sassafras, rabbit tobacco and catmint.
